New Year's Resolution
We genuinely hope everyone has had a great 2010 and that it can only get better from here. Our patients have been a big part of our lives, in and out of the office. It's so nice when you all invite us to your events, send us cards, or even send us a nice Facebook message. Those are the things that make the world go around for us. We hope that all of our patients feel like they have received the best care that they can get here at the office of Dr. Edwin Porter. We strive to know everyone's faces, give a hug or a handshake, and tell you the truth. Our dentistry is in your mouth to last and if something doesn't go as planned, we try our hardest to correct it. Integrity is huge to us!
So as you're going on into the New Year, what are your New Year's resolutions? Lose weight? Stop procrastinating? Walk your dog more? If you'd like to work on your health and smile, we are here to help with that. Dirty gums and teeth can have a monumental impact on your cardiovascular health and we'd love to help you prevent those problems. Please call us today if you'd like to schedule a free consult at 704-544-5330
We are proud to call you all our patients and hope that you have a prosperous and fulfilled year in 2011! You make it all worth it!
Sincerely,
Dr. Ed Porter, Wanda, Samantha, & Katie

I'm a GRINDER?! Never Been Told You Grind?
Occlusal guards are made of rigid materials with laboratory-processed acrylic. They are generally made to be worn over the biting surfaces of either the upper or lower teeth, and are easily inserted and removed by the patient. The lower guard seems to be more comfortable for most of our patients.
Occlusal guards accomplish three main functions:
- They evenly distribute bite forces to protect the teeth from stresses that can crack or wear them abnormally
- Pthey protect the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) from excessive bite stress that can produce pain and dysfunction
- Reduce the heavy forces generated by the jaw-closing muscles.
If you have fillings or crowns and have a grinding habit, you are putting your dentistry and investments at risk. You may not even know that you grind at night but Dr. Porter can tell! We take impressions at your first appointment and then get you back in a week or so to deliver the permanent guard. These are very short appointments and can be combined with a cleaning! And be careful not to just pick one up at the local big box store or drugstore because those will most likely make your grinding habits exacerbated and can cause more damage than good! Call our office to set up and appointment or have any questions answered. Insurance usually covers a good part of these appliances and we can help you break up the payments if need be.

Don't Crunch Down on That Ice!
Chips, fracture lines, and cracks are common results from frequent ice chewing and if any of those issues are large enough, you could require a root canal or even a tooth extraction! Even if frequent ice chewing does not lead to one of these more serious effects, it will still wear down the enamel on your teeth much faster than normal and will lead to cavities.
If you're a chronic ice chewer, it's really in your teeth's best interest for you to break the habit! Whether it’s a nervous habit, out of boredom or it’s something that you crave, get to the root of the cause and work on that. You can even try drinking your drinks through a straw to help you resist the urge or simply order drinks without ice altogether. Just remember that the rush of the crunch just isn't worth the damage you're doing to your oral health!
At Dr. Porter’s office, we use many different types of technology to diagnose whether or not you’ve done damage to your teeth through ice crunching or other means. Digital x-rays are our first line of defense and a great tool in helping us see through and between teeth. We use the Diagnodent laser to diagnose cavities that are barely detectable with the naked eye or cannot be seen with the use of x-rays. We will take photos of your teeth and show you what we see! How better to understand than seeing a large image of your tooth on the screen and then having us help you plan a way to repair the tooth! We have flexible payment options and accept and file your insurance to make it easier on your pocket and your time! Call Dr. Porter located at the Arboretum at 704-544-5330 or e-mail Wanda@DentistryinCharlotte.com to schedule an exam or cleaning today!

Brrr! Tooth Sensitivity to Cold?!
· Brushing to hard or with too much pressure which removes gum tissue.
· Aging
· Using a hard tooth brush instead of a soft one
· Poor oral hygiene which leads to plaque build-up around the teeth and gums. This plaque hardens into tartar and the bacteria that live in plaque cause gum disease and gum recession
· If you have exposed roots, they contain small pores or tubules which lead directly to the nerve of the tooth. Pain, pressure and cold stimuli can travel down the tubules and trigger the tooth nerve causing pain and discomfort
· Tooth whitening procedures or using teeth whitening toothpaste is great for the look of teeth but sometimes can be uncomfortable
· Hypersensitivity
· Cracked teeth
· Grinding your teeth
· Long term use of mouthwashes such as Listerine can damage dentin and cause dentin sensitivity which can reverse the beneficial effects of toothpaste
· Enamel erosion by acidic foods
· Root sensitivity can occur after having your teeth cleaned, following root planning , crown placement, or even having fillings
· People with sensitivities to sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch also usually have sensitive teeth
· Dehydration due to diuretics such as alcohol beverages, caffeine-containing drinks like coffee and Mountain Dew

Black Friday Tips from Dr. Porter's Office
-Get some sleep after your turkey dinner! Most retailers will be opening their doors early around 2:00am or 3:00am….so you can’t sleep in until 9am the next day!
-Have a list and prioritize. Start with best deals that mean something to YOU. Hit those first and then work your way down the list.
-If you don’t want to get up, get dressed and make your way out in the cold, you have the option to shop online. Most retailers will have the same deals as they have in-stores, you just get to skip the madness. Just watch out for the shipping costs that may be a little more.
-Wait until Cyber Monday, November 29th! They will not have the same deals as Black Friday, but there may be different deals or entirely new deals that may be of interest to you.
And always remember if you get a tooth knocked out in the hub-bub of Black Friday, we can help you out! Dr. Porter accepts emergency patients and works with your insurance to get your teeth fixed. The Arboretum is close to everything in Charlotte and we can make you look and feel great.

Use your Dental Insurance or Lose It!
The end of the year is fast approaching and some things seem to remain the same. Once again I’m talking about dental insurance. Each year our office in bombarded with calls requesting an appointment before the end of the year. Most dental benefits expire at the end of the year. It would be nice if they “rolled-over” like your cell phone minutes but we all know that is not the case. Needless to say, we hardly ever have enough available appointments to fill all the requests. I thought we were alone in this insurance battle until I read a report that touched on this topic. The statistics are interesting.
Did you Know?
It is estimated that more than 80% of people with DentalBenefits fail to use all of their benefits for that calender year
It is also estimated that more than 90% of the 80% have untreated dental needs
The bottom line is, 7 out of every 10 people needing dental treatment fail to maximize their dental benefits each year. That’s an enormous amount of unused benefits! Even more of a concern, that is a staggering number of untreated people.
Having dental insurance is an awesome benefit. If you have insurance and need treatment you need to remember, USE IT OR LOSE IT!

Halloween Cavities?!
Halloween is next week, which means a seemingly endless supply of candy. Candy is a nightmare for your teeth. Especially since Halloween candy seems to last well past the first snowfall. Even though candy is bad for your teeth, I am not going to tell you to give it up completely. Let's be honest, who would listen to that?
The type of candy you do eat is important. Sticky candies like taffy, gummy bears and licorice are the worst for your teeth. This type of candy gets caught on tooth surfaces and in between teeth. Also, try to avoid chewing on hard candies because there is a chance for a tooth fracture or damage to a filling. Hard candies like lollipops tend to remain in the mouth for long periods of time, thus subjecting your teeth to prolonged acid attacks. Avoid gum that has sugar in it as well.
After eating a piece of candy, there are some preventative measures that can be helpful. Ideally, if you can brush your teeth right after consumption with fluoride toothpaste, this is the best. If not, make sure to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss. If brushing your teeth after candy is not an option, try swishing with water. Also try chewing sugarless gum for twenty minutes and this has been proven to reduce tooth decay because it increases saliva production.

Toothbrush too close to the TOILET?
Just a fun tip to prevent any ickiness on your toothbrush! Dentists have recommended that a toothbrush be kept at least six feet away from a toilet to avoid airborne particles resulting from the flush. Keep your brush away from the flush!

We are a Green Office!
We just had Earth Day not too long ago and we want to recognize how our office has been “GREEN” for a while now. We are a paperless office that utilizes the use of encrypted computers to store our patient information. We are able to keep photos of all our patients’ teeth, the procedures they have done, and their appointments on our computers. So at your next appointment, don’t be afraid to ask to see any photos you have! It’s quite fun to see your tooth on a 42 inch television screen!
We also use digital x-rays that help both our patients and the environment. The digital x-rays offer less than 80% of the regular amount of radiation that celluloid or old-timey x-rays would produce. Also, the new x-rays don’t give off any bad chemicals in the environment.
We definitely try to protect the earth and our patients…You can always feel safe with us at Dr. Porter’s Office!

Please feel free to share some information about your favorite local hang-outs in Charlotte, and everything you love best about “your neck of the woods.” And, who knows, we might just post your response on our social networks!

The importance of smiling, from Dr. Edwin Porter
The players' photos were enlarged, and researchers studied their smile intensity (wide smile, no smile or partial smile). The players' smile ratings were then compared with data from deaths that occurred from 2006 through last year. The researchers then took into account other factors associated with longevity, such as body mass index, or BMI, career length and college attendance. They found that players who weren't smiling died at the average age of 72.9 years. Players with partial smiles lived to be 75. Those with big smiles, however, lived on average to be 79.9 years old!
The take-away from the new study? Smile now, smile often and you might just live longer! Have you tried perfecting your smile by visiting Dr. Porter lately? If not, give our team a call today at 704.544.5330!

Ask Dr. Porter: What's the best advice you've ever received?
The answer, as he recalled, is simple:
To treat patients in the same manner that I would like to be treated. It’s also most important to be careful, kind, and make the experience as pain-free as it can be!
At the office of Dr. Edwin S. Porter, we focus all of our energy on our patients! We treat our patients with the same care and concern as we would our own family members. There's no surprise that for more than 15 years, we’ve been creating beautiful smiles and building lasting relationships with our patients.
Happy Tuesday!

Dr. Edwin Porter, Charlotte's CEREC provider
The CEREC Process
First, Dr. Edwin Porter will meet with you to discuss the details of the procedure. During the procedure, Dr. Porter will apply a thin layer of reflective powder onto your tooth and will use a special camera to take a photo of your tooth. Using Computer Aided Design, the photo serves as an optimal impression. The restoration will then be designed by the computer on this impression. Then CEREC will use a diamond bur and disk to create your restoration piece out of a high tech ceramic. Finally, the ceramic restoration is bonded to your tooth using state-of-the-art adhesive dentistry.
Dr. Porter is your local CEREC dentist for single-visit tooth restorations here in Charlotte. Call us today to schedule an appointment!

Ask Dr. Edwin Porter: Why is it so important to have straight teeth?
Straight teeth are less prone to decay, Dr. Porter says, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!
If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, or are just imperfect, please give us a call - Dr. Porter can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from treatment.

Meet Our Dentist
With the philosophy that dentistry is a partnership, Dr. Porter educates his patients on good oral hygiene while allowing them to achieve optimal dental health. He believes that improving patient’s smiles through conservative, cosmetic dental techniques has a positive impact on their overall appearance and self confidence. In 2001, after completing 500 approved dental continuing education hours and passing a comprehensive examination, Dr. Porter earned his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. There are only eight other dentists that are Fellows in the Academy practicing in the Charlotte area.
In accordance with his philosophy on the importance of continuing dental education, Dr. Porter has published several articles in distinguished dental journals and lectured to his dental colleagues. He enjoys being able to share with his peers his acquired dental knowledge through lecture and articles.
Outside of work, Dr. Porter enjoys spending time with his wife and four children. His interests include running and cycling. He has cycled in the MS 150 Race for the past four years and has also run a marathon. He is committed to serving the local community and is actively involved with his church.
