How to keep your Child's Teeth Healthy for Halloween!

Dr. Porter wants to help keep your children’s teeth from cavities!  Below, we have some great tips for those Halloween treats your child may be getting this holiday!

As soon as your child gets home, sort through the candy. Remove the candy they don’t really like. Once the good candy is gone they will move on to the not so favorite candy- so get rid of it! The most frightening candy to a kid’s teeth is sour gummy candy. Not only is it sugary and sticky but the sour flavoring is acidic which is the worse combination for anyone’s teeth.  Kid’s with braces need to remove these orthodontic nightmares from their pile which consist of caramels, hard candy, bubblegum, taffy, licorice, candy apples and popcorn.

Don’t let the bags of candy disappear. Kids love to keep their Halloween candy and goodies in their bedroom.  This is a big NO-NO. Grazing on candy all day and before bedtime is a cavity waiting to happen. Keep candy where parents can keep an eye on it.

Spread it out. Take Halloween candy and put it in smaller bags giving it to kids weekly.  They can prolong the Halloween holiday and not have so much candy at once.

No Halloween candy in school lunchboxes! Kids usually get enough sugar at school with fruit juices and sports drinks and then they don’t brush until bedtime. That’s at least 8 hours of sugar just sitting on their teeth. This is SCARIER than HALLOWEEN!

It's rainy and cold but the smiles are still flowing here at Dr. Porter's office! Just a heads up, our office has been closed the latter half of this week. How Important Is Your Toothbrush?

Number one thing is to actually have any type of toothbrush and use it!! Manual or electric…Get those bristles touching teeth at least twice a day. It’s amazing how soft plaque can be wisked away with just a quick swipe of your toothbrush!
At the office of Dr. Edwin Porter, we recommend the Sonicare electric toothbrush just because of how advanced it is in cleaning your teeth. Plus it is so much easier! It brushed for 2 minutes and pulses at the end of each 30 second interval to let you know to move on to the other corner of your mouth. How easy is that?! The electric action pulses in between teeth and can help you get a deeper clean than with a manual toothbrush.
There is even a Sonicare for Kids that makes brushing fun and instills that good habit! It’s a smaller size and comes in fun colors.

Taking Care of What Goes in Your Mouth at Dr. Porter's

Today at Dr. Porter’s office, we all spent time doing maintenance! It’s very important that dental offices maintain and update their systems, whether it is for the computers or the equipment. Today, the equipment was cleaned, serviced, and given the thumbs up. At Dr. Porter’s we all make sure that the facility is clean and that the equipment that we use is in mint conditions. No second-hand pieces here! Our handpieces that are used to drill away cavities are the best on the market for better restorations and less likelihood of pain. Our cleaning equipment that sterilizes each instrument is above industry standards and our patients can rest assured that there are no one else’s germs on the instruments. We work hard to continue our training outside of the office, as well. Last Week to Use End of Year Insurance Benefits!

This is a reminder that there is only one more week to use your dental insurance or flexible spending benefits before the year is over! That means if you do not use your benefits, you LOSE them! If you need a filling, crown, or have just been waiting a while for your cleaning, make sure to give us a call ASAP! We will do our best to fit you in to best use your benefit dollars.

At the office of Dr. Edwin Porter, we accept all insurances and will file the claims for you. All the hard to understand paperwork is something that we will complete and electronically send off. Dr. Porter wants you to focus on your oral health and not how hard dental insurance can be to work with!

Fall Into Good Oral Hygiene Habits!

It’s that time of year when the leaves are falling and the temperature is getting cooler. It’s also the time to think about your oral hygiene routine! Do you know all the steps to keep your pearly whites in healthy and beautiful condition? Well start with brushing and flossing twice daily. We recommend an electric toothbrush with a soft bristled head. And I promise you, this does not make you lazy! It’s clinically proven to help you brush for the correct amount of time, with the proper speed and pressure, and can get those harder to reach spots that may be hard manually. Dr. Edwin Porter also recommends a fluoride rinse at night before bed to keep those pesky cavities at bay. Other important tidbits to remember are to chew gum that is sugarless and contains xylitol, to never chew on ice, and to keep your cleaning and check-up appointments!!

When Should You Change Your Toothbrush?

The average American only changes their brushes 2 times per year. The American Dental Association recommends that you change your toothbrush at least four times a year, which is approximately every 3 months and every time you are sick. If the bristles of your toothbrush start flaring before three to four months, then you are using too much pressure to brush your teeth. People with gum problems, other oral diseases, or weakened immune systems should change their toothbrush more often.

At the office of Dr. Edwin S. Porter, we give you a goody bag containing a new toothbrush, floss, toothpaste and usually some mouthwash. We want to help you keep your smile nice and clean! If you ever need an extra toothbrush, just ask! We’ll be happy to help you out.
